Places to Go in SLO: #6 Goshi Japanese Restaurant

November 13, 2014

Holla if you love sushi!

I know I do – a lot! And as a sushi lover, I, naturally, searched far and wide  for the best Japanese restaurant when I moved to San Luis. It took me a bit, but, about a month ago, I found the place!

At the south end of downtown Higuera, tucked away in the small promenade behind The Creamery (lining the creekside) is Goshi!

Goshi is a what some people would call a "hole in the wall" restaurant. It's a hidden gem – a small place that has an authentic environment and product.

Although this restaurant is small, its following is big. My advice is to not let the waiting list turn you away. I've watched groups walk away due to the lack of available seating. I'm here to tell you that the experience inside is worth the wait!

Once inside we were hooked! The place was decorated to look like the outside of a Japanese town, with the traditional wood awnings and pictures of dragons (I love that kind of stuff).

We split a half and half roll combo which was a choice of two 8 piece plates (very filling!). I would have taken a picture of the beautifully displayed rolls, but I honestly could not stop us from digging in right away. And once we had begun, there was no way of stopping us. Just trust me when I say "they were absolutely scrumptious".

We were so pleased with the rolls that we took our waiter's suggestion and ordered a Goshi special, which, I, of course, can not for the life of me remember the name of. It was a sashimi salad of sorts with a unique Japanese dressing. (Salmon, white albacore, and tuna accompanied with veggies and a generous helping of fresh garlic.) I've never had anything like it, but I would definitely order it again and recommend it to you!

To win over your trust even more, I will add,  that before this outing I had a strong opinion of raw fish. To be a bit more clear – I hated it! I wanted to be sure though, so I went in for the big test that night and came out a different person. Their sashimi wasn't fishy at all (I'm assuming you know what I mean by "fishy" when referring to fish). Instead it was light, fresh, and extremely tasty.

The staff were all kind and welcoming. It felt like you had entered into their home. Interacting and laughing with each other, they presented themselves like a family. It was a wonderful experience being served there.

Next time I'm getting a seat at the bar though – the people seated there looked like they were having the most fun, and I'm almost positive I saw one of the chefs slip a couple an extra roll, free of charge!

So, if  you're in the area, and you're craving sushi, head on over to Goshi. It is definitely the place to go in SLO for authentic Japanese cuisine!
